The decision on who will play quarterback for the University of Virginia has been made -- for now.

"We decided Tuesday to start Don Majkowski," Coach George Welsh said today in announcing his choice for Saturday's home game against 20th-ranked Georgia Tech (3-1). "But we told Kevin Ferguson he had to be ready to play. We may be using two quarterbacks again, in reverse order."

Ferguson, a sophomore, had started all five games for the Cavaliers (4-1). As a reserve, Majkowski has completed 13 of 23 passes for 188 yards and four touchdowns in Virginia's two most recent victories. In both games, he entered with the Cavaliers trailing.

In those two games, Ferguson completed five of 15 passes for 74 yards and was intercepted three times.

"We thought Don had practiced a little better the last two weeks and played a little better," Welsh said.

Majkowski has a tough team against which to make his first collegiate start. Georgia Tech ranks in the top 20 nationally in three defensive categories and uses as many as 15 defensive formations. Welsh said the variety of formations would not be a significant factor in the outcome of the game.
