Buford McGee, a rookie with the San Diego Chargers, told the Greensboro (N.C.) News & Record he was offered more than $80,000 five years ago to attend college on a football scholarship.

He didn't identify who made the offer. He eventually became a running back at the University of Mississippi . . .

Michigan State basketball player Scott Skiles, already charged with possessing drugs in Indiana, was arrested last month on a suspicion of drunken driving near the Michigan State campus, officials said. A formal charge will likely be made shortly, said Vickie Chapman, criminal clerk for 55th District Court.

Skiles will have no comment on his "personal actions," said Nick Vista, sports information director at MSU. "He remains a member (of the team) in good standing as of right now," Vista said . . .

Bertha Cummings has been named interim head coach of the University of the District of Columbia women's basketball team. In her first year as a head coach, she lead Virginia State to an 18-7 record last season. She replaces Bessie Stockard, who was fired . . .

Maryland quarterback Frank Reich practiced for the first time since injuring his shoulder against Wake Forest Sept. 29. "He looked fine," Coach Bobby Ross said. Ross hasn't decided if Reich or Stan Gelbaugh will start Saturday against Duke.
