The thoroughbred and harness tracks of Maryland submitted their requests for 1985 racing dates to the Maryland Racing Commission yesterday. If approved, it would mean that Laurel Race Course will take over the dates usually assigned to Bowie, the area pioneer in winter racing.
A compromise was reached earlier in the week that would accommodate a request by Freestate harness track to run at a different time than Laurel Race Course, a thoroughbred track. Freestate has requested May 16 through Oct. 2, Laurel from Jan. 20 through March 10 and Sept 22 through Dec. 31.
The commission will meet in Baltimore Thursday to discuss the allotment of dates, which are expected to be approved that day.
Bowie asked for Jan. 1 through Jan. 19 (17 days), Laurel Jan. 20 through March 10 (42 days), Pimlico March 11 through June 1 (72 days), Bowie June 3 through July 13 (36 days), Pimlico, July 15 through Aug. 23 (32 days), Timonium Aug. 24 through Sept. 2 (10 days), Pimlico Sept. 3 through Sept. 21 (17 days), Laurel Sept. 22 through Dec. 31 (80 days).
HARNESS: Rosecroft Jan. 23 through May 15 (85 days), Freestate May 16 through Oct. 2 (115 days), Rosecroft Oct. 3 through Dec. 31 (60 days), Ocean Downs May 24 through Sept. 14 (85 days).
