Tailback George Adams ran for 110 yards and two touchdowns to lead Kentucky to a 17-12 victory over Tennessee today as both teams accepted bowl bids.
The Volunteers (6-3-1 overall, 2-3 in the Southeastern Conference) accepted a bid to the Sun Bowl to face Maryland. Tennessee defeated Maryland, 30-23, in last year's Citrus Bowl.
The Wildcats (8-3, 3-3) will head to the Hall of Fame Bowl for the second straight year, playing Wisconsin Dec. 29.
Kentucky took the lead for good 4:25 into the game when Adams, who became the third Wildcat to top 1,000 yards, with 1,085 this season, scored on a two-yard run. The 25-yard drive began when Tennessee tailback Charles Wilson fumbled on the first play and defensive guard Frank Hare recovered.
Adams scored on a one-yard run in the third quarter to give the Wildcats a 14-6 lead and Joey Worley added a 34-yard field goal with 2:09 left after Tennessee had closed to 14-12.
In the first half, Tennessee's Fuad Reveiz kicked field goals of 37 and 36 yards.
Tennessee scored its only touchdown on an 11-yard pass from Tony Robinson to Eric Swanson with 11:28 left in the game. But on the two-point conversion attempt that would have tied the score, Robinson was stopped at the two.
