Indiana basketball Coach Bobby Knight has been formally requested to relay information he might have on recruiting violations by other Big Ten schools to the conference office.

"It is essential to public confidence in the integrity of our conference programs that we vigorously investigate your concerns . . . " wrote Dean Robert A. Stein, of the University of Minnesota Law School and chairman of the Conference Compliance Committee.

In a separate action, the conference formally reprimanded Knight and Michigan Coach Bill Frieder for missing conference meetings . . .

Navy football Coach Gary Tranquill will be an assistant coach for the East team in the Hula Bowl, Jan. 5 in Hawaii. Navy players selected for the East squad were defensive tackle Eric Rutherford and tight end Mark Stevens. Rutherford and guard Mark Long were named to the ECAC Division 1-A All-East Team . . .

Lyndon DeBellotte, a guard for the District of Columbia, was named to the ECAC honor roll, and Malissa Stephenson of the Firebird women's team was named ECAC rookie of the week.

In three games last week DeBellotte had 61 points, 12 rebounds, six assists, five steals and a block. He was 15 for 15 from the foul line. Against Longwood (a 72-71 UDC win) he hit 10 of 10 from field. Stephenson, in two games, scored 47 points and had 22 rebounds, four assists and eight steals as UDC won twice to improve to 5-2 . . .

American University forward Beth Shearer has been named the ECAC-South women's basketball rookie of the week. In two games last week, Shearer averaged 18 points and 4.5 rebounds . . . .

Heisman Trophy winner Doug Flutie of Boston College will be honored by the Touchdown Club at a luncheon Thursday at the Sheraton Washington Hotel. Flutie will be presented the "Timmy" award for being college football's best quarterback.
