Woody Widenhofer, 41, a former Missouri linebacker who helped mold the defense for the Pittsburgh Steelers' four Super Bowl championships, is expected to be introduced as football coach of the University of Missouri today.
This year, he was head coach of the USFL's Oklahoma Outlaws. His job was dissolved when the Outlaws left Tulsa to merge with the Arizona Wranglers . . .
The University of Georgia's football program is being investigated by the NCAA for possible recruiting violations, Athletic Director-Coach Vince Dooley acknowledged.
"It's true that there has been an ongoing cooperative inquiry into a limited number of allegations regarding recruiting violations in football at Georgia," Dooley said. Dooley, in Orlando, Fla., preparing his Bulldogs for their Citrus Bowl game with Florida State, was quoted in today's Atlanta Constitution. The NCAA also is looking at Georgia's basketball program . . .
Doug Flutie, Boston College's record-setting passer, will add the Maxwell Club (Philadelphia) award to his Heisman as 1984's outstanding player, the club announced. He is the 12th quarterback to win the Maxwell, first given in 1937 . . .
A Shreveport, La., hearing on lifting the order that let Outland trophy lineman Bruce Smith play for Virginia Tech in the Independence Bowl will probably be postponed from today to at least Friday. The NCAA doesn't see the issue as moot.
