Buffalo center Brent Peterson, known for his defensive style of play, changed gears and assisted on three goals to lead the Sabres to the victory.

The win was the sixth in a row for Buffalo and improved its home ice record to 13-1-6.

Peterson assisted on goals by Mike Ramsey, Bill Hajt and Ric Seiling. Mike Foligno, John Tucker, Gil Perreault and Paul Cyr also scored for Buffalo. Moe Mantha and Wayne Babych scored for Pittsburgh.

Mantha put the Penguins in the lead at 7:25 of the first period when he made a nice move to get around a Buffalo defenseman and broke in alone on Sabres goalie Tom Barrasso.

Mantha faked Barrasso to the ice and beat him with a quick shot to the stick side.

The Sabres tied the game on a power-play goal with just 13 seconds left in the period. Peterson won a faceoff and sent the puck back to Ramsey, who drove a shot from the point past Penguins goalie Dennis Herron.

In the middle period, Peterson won another faceoff while the Sabres were shorthanded. Hajt's 30-foot drive just got past Herron, who had appeared to make the save.
