David Robinson scored a career-high 39 points and had 18 rebounds tonight to lead Navy over East Carolina, 87-68, for the Midshipmen's 11th straight victory in an ECAC South game at Minges Coliseum.

The Midshipmen are now 14-2, 7-0 in the league. The Pirates are 5-10, 0-4.

Navy was hanging onto a 57-55 lead following a jumper by East Carolina's Keith Sledge with 12:48 remaining in the game. Robinson then keyed a 24-4 Navy run that moved the Midshipmen to an 81-59 lead with three minutes remaining.

Robinson, a sophomore center from Woodbridge, Va., scored 16 points in the stretch, most of them coming off short turnaround jumpers.

The Pirates led by 29-28 with 5:47 to play in the first half following Curt Vanderhorst's 18-footer. But Robinson's two free throws and Vernon Butler's five-foot bank shot put Navy ahead to stay, 32-29, with four minutes left. The Midshipmen led at halftime, 43-40.

Robinson made 14 of 22 floor shots and 11 of 13 foul shots in 37 minutes. He also blocked three shots. Butler, a junior, scored 20 points, hitting all eight of his free throws, and had 11 rebounds.

Navy, fifth in the nation in defensive field goal percentage (40.1), held East Carolina to 32 percent -- 10 of 31 -- after intermission.

William Grady led the Pirates with 15 points; Sledge and Vanderhorst had 12 each.
