Top-seeded Mark Talbott and second-seeded Ned Edwards advanced yesterday to today's noon semifinals of the Chivas Regal Squash Classic at Capitol Hill Squash Club, but the third, fourth and fifth seeds were upset.

Talbott, of Boston, defeated Jon Foster of New York, 15-8, 11-15, 15-12, 15-13, in their quarterfinal match. Earlier in the day, Talbott defeated Frank Satterthwaite of New York, 17-16, 15-11, 15-11.

Edwards beat Michael Desaulniers, 17-15, 15-4, 15-6, in another quarterfinal match between New York residents.

Steve Bowditch of Australia upset Clive Caldwell, the fifth seed, in a quarterfinal match, 16-18, 15-10, 10-15, 15-4, 15-7. Earlier in the day, Bowditch had beaten third-seeded Mario Sanchez of Mexico, 9-15, 17-16, 15-11, 15-12.

Todd Binns of Toronto was the fourth player to reach the semifinals. Binns defeated Gordon Anderson of Toronto, 18-14, 15-10, 10-15, 17-14. Anderson earlier had eliminated the No. 4 seed, John Nimick of Philadelphia, 9-15, 15-10, 15-12, 11-15, 15-10.

Desaulniers, who is unseeded, reached the quarterfinals when he defeated Sharif Khan of Canada, 7-15, 15-5, 15-8, 16-14.

In the women's draw, all four seeds advanced to today's semifinals. Alicia McConnell of Brooklyn and the University of Pennsylvania, the top seed, defeated Sara Luther of Denver, 15-10, 12-15, 15-2, 15-10.
