Virginia senior guard Tim Mullen was in a bar recently when he spotted someone wearing a shirt he had to have. "You have to give me that shirt," Mullen said. The guy gave him the shirt off his back. It read: "Virginia may be for lovers, but Chaminade is for basketball."
Mullen, who played in Chaminade's 1982 upset over then top-ranked Virginia, has been wearing the shirt ever since . . .
Mullen's coach, Terry Holland, is expected to be back tonight when the Cavaliers host George Washington University. Holland missed four games with an intestinal problem . . .
Speaking of coaches, do you know what Clemson Coach Cliff Ellis did before he got into coaching? He was the lead singer in a rock band that cut several records . . .
And, speaking of assistant coaches, how about this for an itinerary: Go to Philadelphia to scout a game Thursday, spend Friday snowed in there, drive home to North Carolina Friday night, fly to Washington to scout another game Saturday, fly all night to Los Angeles Saturday night, scout a noon game Sunday and fly home to North Carolina, arriving at about 1 a.m. on Sunday night. The assistant is Duke's Pete Gaudet, who scouted Harvard Thursday; Georgia Tech-Maryland Saturday and UCLA-Notre Dame Sunday. Life in the big time isn't always fun.
