Outfielder Al Bumbry, released by the Orioles at the end of last season, has signed a contract with the San Diego Padres. Bumbry scored the winning run in the Padres' 8-7 victory over the San Francisco Giants in Yuma, Ariz. The game was halted in the bottom of the fifth inning because of howling winds and blowing sand . . .

Larry Bowa, informed by Manager Jim Frey that he has lost his starting shorstop job with the Chicago Cubs to rookie Shawon Dunston, is fighting with third base coach Don Zimmer.

Wednesday, Zimmer called Bowa "the most selfish player I have ever known . . . "

Bowa responded, "I could have buried him (Zimmer), but why bother? He's not worth it."

Zimmer, a lifelong friend of Frey's, said his criticisms of Bowa were motivated by what he said were Bowa's constant complaints to representatives of the media about Zimmer's relationship with the manager.
