Jimmy Connors' back injury flared up again yesterday, forcing him to retire in the second set of the WCT Finals semifinals against Ivan Lendl and placing his opponent in today's championship match against Tim Mayotte in Dallas.
Connors, who pulled a back muscle and defaulted last week in Chicago, reinjured himself in the first set as he tried to follow a shot to the net.
Lendl won the set, 6-3, and was leading, 2-1, in the second set when Connors said he couldn't continue.
"I just pulled something in there and couldn't make it," said Connors.
In the other semifinal, Mayotte's strong serve-and-volley game overcame Joakim Nystrom, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.
Lendl is 6-0 against Mayotte . . .
Rain washed out play in the $200,000 Family Circle Magazine Cup women's tournament in Hilton Head Island, S.C. Organizers said they hoped to stage both tournament semifinals and final today.
Top-seeded Chris Evert Lloyd, seeking her second consecutive Family Circle crown, will be in one of the semifinals. Second-seeded Manuela Maleeva of Bulgaria will be in the other. Their opponents have yet to be determined as the rain that moved into the area Friday forced suspension of two quarterfinal matches.
Fourth-seeded Pam Shriver had a 7-5, 4-3 lead over unseeded Gabriela Sabatini and 11th-seeded Steffi Graf held a 6-1, 5-6 lead over unseeded Petra Huber.
