Brian Bellows had a goal and two assists for his first points of the playoffs as the visitors defeated Chicago in the first game of their best-of-seven Norris Division final.

The Black Hawks led, 3-0, 5:42 into the first period on goals by Ed Olczyk, Doug Wilson and Tom Lysiak.

But Minnesota scored the next six goals, three unassisted.

Dennis Maruk's wrist shot beat Chicago goalie Murray Bannerman at 7:05. Willi Plett's 25-foot slap shot narrowed the score to 3-2 at 7:27, then Minnesota scored four goals in the second period, for a 6-3 lead.

Chicago scored at 4:11 of the third period on Jack O'Callahan's long slap shot, set up by Troy Murray's second assist.

Minnesota scored 30 seconds later when Steve Payne tipped in Gordie Roberts' slap shot. Chicago's Behn Wilson beat Gilles Meloche from long range to make it 7-5.

Minnesota's Paul Holmgren was scratched from the lineup while North Stars officials try to determine his future as a player.

Holmgren, 29, has been considering retirement so he doesn't lose a $165,000 tax-free disability payment for a serious shoulder injury he suffered in last year's playoffs.
