Winston-Salem took advantage of two Prince William errors and a two-run triple by Rolando Roomes for a five-run eighth inning as the Spirits downed the Pirates, 7-2, in a Carolina League game last night before 695 at Prince William County Stadium in Woodbridge.
Antonio Cordova began the Winston-Salem eighth with a single off left-handed reliever Scott Neal (1-2). After Dave Martinez singled, Neal was relieved by Chip Cunningham. Cunningham's pick-off attempt ended up in center field and the runners advanced to second and third.
After Luis Cruz grounded out to Steve Barnard at third, Jim Dickerson's sacrifice fly to center tied the score at 2. Cunningham intentionally walked Damon Berryhill before Roomes' triple to right center gave the Spirits the lead for good. A single by Steve Cordner scored Roomes. Cordner scored when Hector Freytes' fly ball was dropped in center field by Scott Knox.
The Pirates took a 2-1 lead on successive second-inning singles by Lance Belen, Barnard and Frank Klopp and a third-inning RBI single by Van Evans.
Tad Slowik picked up the win for Winston-Salem, yielding one hit in 2 2/3 innings of relief. Jamie Moyer started for Winston-Salem, striking out seven but yielding eight hits, three walks and two earned runs.
