Dale Hunter scored on a slap shot with 1:24 remaining in the first overtime period to give the Quebec Nordiques a 7-6 NHL playoff victory over the visiting Montreal Canadiens last night.
It was Quebec's second overtime victory in three games against Montreal in the Adams Division final series, which the Nordiques lead, 2-1. Game 4 will be played in Quebec Thursday.
Hunter's low shot beat Canadien goalie Steve Penney to the far left corner of the net.
Quebec forward Wilf Paiement tipped a Brent Ashton wrist shot past Penney with five minutes remaining in regulation to tie the game, 6-6.
Paiement's goal came after Mike McPhee had scored two goals in a span of 2:01 in the third period to give Montreal a 6-5 lead.
McPhee scored his second goal at 8:32 when he banked a shot from behind the Nordiques' net off the back of goalie Mario Gosselin's leg.
Two minutes and one second earlier, he had tied the game, 5-5, with a wrist shot from the slot.
Quebec's Michel Goulet scored his third goal of the game at 0:52 of the third period on a power play to tie the score, 4-4.
Less than five minutes later, Nordiques rookie defenseman Bruce Bell scored on another power play to give Quebec a 5-4 lead before McPhee went to work.
