In Houston, Rick Mahler (5-0) became the NL's top winner and teammate Dale Murphy hit his league-leading eighth and ninth homers.
Mahler allowed eight hits, struck out one and walked one in eight innings. Loser Mike Scott (1-1) went 4 1/3 and gave up six runs on six hits.
Houston took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Bill Doran led off with a single, moved to third on a single by Kevin Bass and scored on Denny Walling's base hit. Bass then scored from third when Jose Cruz hit into a double play.
The Braves moved ahead, 3-2, in the second. Consecutive singles by Bob Horner, Chris Chambliss and Rick Cerone scored one run. An error by Walling at first allowed another to come home, and Mahler drove in the third run of the inning with a fielder's-choice grounder.
Atlanta got two runs in the third after a single by Rafael Ramirez and walks to Brad Komminsk and Bob Horner loaded the bases with one out. Walling's throwing error on a ground ball by Chambliss allowed Ramirez and Komminsk to score.
Murphy's homer in the fifth made it 6-2, then he hit a two-run homer in the ninth.
