Onyxly, making his first start of the year, easily held off the late challenge of Act Away to win the $50,000-added Riggs Handicap at Pimlico today under a clever ride by Jimmy Miranda.
The Johnny Campo-trained colt broke the track record (1:40 3/5) for the 1 1/16 miles on the refurbished turf course. The previous record was set by Act Away last week.
Act Away was disqualified and placed fourth for allegedly coming out on Nagurski in the stretch. Count My Love, the original third place finisher, was moved up to second and Nagurski was elevated from fourth to third.
The winner paid $15.20 and the exacta of 7-6 paid $369.80. The crowd of 12,912 wagered $1,738,131 on the 10-race card, bringing the average total for the betting to $1,141,605 and the average attendance to 8,133, a rise of nearly 2 percent in both categories.
Pimlico announced that Hajji's Treasure, winner of last Saturday's $235,000 California Derby at Golden Gate Fields, will be supplemented to the Preakness Stakes on May 18.
The California-bred son of Pirate's Bounty has not been nominated to the Kentucky Derby, which has no supplemental provisions. Hajji's Treasure won the California Derby while running with Lasix for the first time.
