John McEnroe beat unseeded Mike Leach in the semifinals of the WCT Atlanta tournament, 6-3, 6-3. No. 2 seed Kevin Curren, who told officials he had a stomach ailment, defaulted his semifinal against unseeded Paul Annacone.
McEnroe was trailing, 3-2, and down 15-40 before rallying to win four straight games and the opening set against Leach, the 1982 NCAA champion from Michigan.
But Leach found something to be pleased with in the match: "I felt much better today against John than when I played him in Chicago recently. I was nervous, yes, but at least I wasn't visibly shaking in my shorts." . . .
Martina Navratilova overwhelmed 15-year-old Katerina Maleeva, 6-1 6-0, to win the Tournament of Champions in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
Navratilova did not lose a set against five opponents in cruising to her fifth 1985 tournament victory. The title match took 49 minutes, with Navratilova mostly playing from the baseline. When she did move in, she caught Maleeva flat-footed with sharp volley placements.
Maleeva, No. 33 in the world and the sister of No. 4 Manuela, won her first service game with a strong forehand, but never took another.
