Lenny Wilkens, new general manager of the Seattle SuperSonics, says he has not talked to Georgetown Coach John Thompson about coaching the National Basketball Association team.
He says he's heard the rumor that Thompson will be the next head coach if Seattle gets the No. 1 pick -- which presumably would be used to take Georgetown's Patrick Ewing -- in Sunday's seven-team lottery.
"That certainly would be quite a package," conceded Wilkens, like Thompson a graduate of Prividence. "But that's strictly a rumor right now."
Thompson was not available to comment yesterday . . .
Houston Rockets center Akeem Olajuwon has been fined $1,500 by the NBA for punching Utah's Billy Paultz in a playoff game. Olajuwon hit Paultz with a right to the side of the face in the fourth quarter of the fifth game of the first-round series won by Utah. . .
Willis Reed, former NBA star who resigned recently as Creighton University head coach, was named assistant coach of the Atlanta Hawks . . .
The Dallas Mavericks waived Tom Sluby, a rookie guard from Notre Dame and Gonzaga High School in Washington who averaged 2.4 points per game this past season. Sluby was the Mavericks' third choice in the second round of last year's draft. He played in 31 of 82 games this season.
