In a story on the Montgomery County girls' soccer championship in Saturday's editions, the goal scorers for Woodward High School were incorrectly identified. Jill Pulley and Courtney Blackstone scored for Woodward, which lost to Churchill, 3 to 2.
Teresa Head put a shot past Woodward goalie Allison Murphy on the 14th penalty kick of a sudden-death shootout to give visiting Churchill High School a 3-2 victory and the Montgomery County girls soccer championship yesterday.
The game went into penalty kicks after two five-minute overtimes and two five-minute sudden-death overtimes.
The score was tied at the end of the first set of penalty kicks, 6-6, when Churchill goalie Courtney Bigelow got a shot past Murphy on the last kick.
At 8-8, Bigelow stopped Emily Brunschwyler's shot with her knee to set the stage for Head.
Woodward led, 2-0, at halftime on goals by Stephanie Bacon and Julie MacKinnon midway through the period. However, Churchill rallied with two goals within a half-minute span of the second half.
Christine Thebo, Churchill's leading scorer (19 goals), found Lauren Romeo cutting across for the Bulldogs' first score. Moments later, Thebo scored on a follow-up to tie the score at 2.
Churchill's victory avenged a 4-1 loss to Woodward (13-2) early in the season. The county title was the first for Churchill (14-1), which has won three of the last five regular-season titles, but never the tournament championship.
