In Seattle, Chet Lemon brought in two runs with his first homer of the season, breaking a 1-1 tie in the seventh inning to lead Detroit.

Walt Terrell raised his record to 5-1, pitching 6 1/3 innings, allowing four hits, two walks and both Mariner runs. He struck out a career-high eight batters.

Willie Hernandez pitched 1 1/3 innings of hitlesss ball for his 10th save.

Lemon connected against reliever Karl Best (0-1). Lance Parrish had singled with two outs and scored on Lemon's homer.

Brian Snyder, making his major-league debut for Seattle, struck out seven in 4 2/3 innings without a walk, but left the game with a blister on his pitching hand.

Seattle took a 1-0 lead in the first on Phil Bradley's seventh home run. Detroit tied the game in the fourth when catcher Bob Melvin, playing in his first major league game, hit the first of his two doubles and scored on a single by Tom Brookens.

Ivan Calderon's leadoff homer in the Seattle seventh, his fifth homer of the season and the fourth in his last six games, made the score 3-2.
