In Philadelphia, Andre Dawson homered and drove in three runs to lead Montreal to its third straight victory. The Phillies lost their fourth consecutive game and 12th in the last 15.
Bryn Smith (6-2) allowed eight hits in 6 2/3 innings for the victory. Gary Lucas got the final out of the seventh inning and Jeff Reardon pitched two scoreless innings for his major league-leading 17th save.
Dawson gave the Expos a 1-0 lead in the first with his eighth home run of the season. Philadlephia tied it in the bottom of the inning. Jeff Stone and Greg Gross singled, then executed a double steal. Stone scored on Smith's wild pitch.
Montreal scored twice in the third against Shane Rawley (4-5) and Jerry Koosman. Mike Fitzgerald drew a leadoff walk from Rawley, who then left the game with a strained left groin. Smith sacrificed Fitzgerald to second and Tim Raines walked. Both runners moved up on a groundout before Dawson hit his two-run single.
The Expos made it 4-1 in the sixth with an unearned run off Dave Rucker.
A leadoff double by Luis Aguayo, a two-out double by Greg Gross and an RBI single by Samuel pulled Philadelphia to 4-3 in the seventh and finished Smith. Lucas replaced Smith and retired Von Hayes on a hard grounder to first baseman Dan Driessen.
