Retirement -- Harold Carmichael, who set several Philadelphia Eagles pass-catching records, announced he is calling it quits. Carmichael played for the Eagles for 13 years before being released prior to the 1984 season. He played briefly for the Dallas Cowboys last year. COLLEGES

Houston -- Basketball player Benny Anders has been arrested on a weapons charge in connection with an incident last month on campus, authorities said. According to police reports, Anders got into a fight with a man, obtained a gun and pointed it at the disputant before being convinced by a third party to put it down. Oregon State -- A committee looking for a new athletic director submitted the names of four candidates, but one -- Bill Cords, athletic director at the University of Texas-El Paso -- has dropped out. The other candidates are: Lynn Snyder, director of athletics at Marshall; Craig Helwig, assistant athletic director at Texas, and Richard Giannini, senior associate athletic director at Florida.
