Two runners from the Chillum track club were triple winners yesterday at the tryouts for the Washington, D.C., U.S. Youth Games team.
The first three finishers in each event will attend a training camp next week at Spingarn High School, the site of yesterday's competition. The team will be chosen from the youngsters attending the camp. The Youth Games will be held at Montclair State in August.
Dawn Simpson won the 100- (14.87), 220- (32.2) and 440-yard (1:11.0) dashes in the girls 9-11 category. Shauna Clarke, who runs for Northwestern High, won the 100 (13.88), 220 (27.88) and 880 (2:28.28) in the girls 14-15 category.
There were four double winners at yesterday's meet. In the boys 9-11 category, William Perry, who last year made the national finals in the 100-yard dash at the ARCO/Jesse Owens championships, won the 100 (13.77) and 220 (28.42).
In the boys 12-13 category, Roy Carpenter won the 100 (12.40) and 220 (26.4). In the boys 14-15 category, Howard Smith won the 100 (12.13) and the long jump (19-6).
In the girls 12-13, Veronica Harris won the 220 (26.88) and 440 (1:02.10).
