Alden's Ambition outran even-money favorite Applause in the stretch yesterday to win the $26,600 Tosmah Handicap for fillies and mares at Bowie Race Course.

Jockey Larry Saumell had Applause first leaving the gate, but Alden's Ambition (6 to 1) and jockey Jesse Davidson advanced quickly on the outside to lead by as many as 1 1/2 lengths for the first of six furlongs. Brazola (9 to 2), Masked Barb (9 to 2) and Duo Disco (5 to 1) ran together, three lengths behind Applause, while Stone Face (8 to 1) trailed.

Applause moved inside Alden's Ambition just beyond the half-mile pole. They matched strides around the turn while increasing their lead to four lengths entering the stretch.

As they straightened for home, Alden's Ambition moved a neck ahead of Applause, who was being whipped steadily by Saumell. Davidson whipped Alden's Ambition four times right-handed, primarily hand-riding the filly to a 2 1/2-length victory in 1:09, the fastest time this meeting. Stone Face (8 to 1) rallied to finish third, five lengths behind Applause.

Alden's Ambition won $17,290 for owner Hal C.B. Claggett. Trained by John Robb, she has won six of 15 races this year, earning $75,973.
