Defending champion Mike Watson of Wootton High School, helped by a hole in one on the 11th hole, came from behind yesterday to defeat Mike Svec of Gonzaga, 1 up, to gain today's final of the Frank Emmet Schoolboy golf championship at Manor Country Club.
Watson, 17, of Lakewood Country Club, will play Fred Widicus of Jefferson in this morning's scheduled 18-hole championship, starting at 8.
Watson, who scored a 2-and-1 victory over Tom Dunn of Good Counsel in last year's final, had little trouble eliminating Dunn, 6 and 5, in yesterday's quarterfinal.
Watson's semifinal against Svec was different. Svec, a 5-foot-5 player from Columbia Country Club, was 2 up after 10 holes. Then Watson hit a seven-iron tee shot high into the wind on the 152-yard, par-3 11th hole for his first hole in one to pull within one shot of Svec.
At 14, Watson drew even when he placed his second shot 15 feet from the hole and two-putted for par.
He led for good with par on the 16th , after Svec drove into a bunker and settled for bogey.
Widicus, 16, the men's club champion at Army Navy Country Club, defeated Doug Ridgway of Magruder, 4 and 2, in the quarterfinals, then came from behind to defeat Dave Patterson of Dulaney by the same score.
Tom Iredell won the 14-15 age group final, defeating Good Counsel teammate Kevin Ehringer, 2 and 1.
