Alden's Ambition took a commanding lead through the backstretch, then held off a challenge by Duo Disco in the stretch to win the $27,225 Lady Baltimore Handicap at Bowie Race Course.
Ridden by Jesse Davidson, Alden's Ambition (2 to 1) led six fillies and mares into the first turn of the 1 1/16-mile race. Table Angle (13-1) ran two lengths behind the leader, followed by Birthday Fling (36-1) and Duo Disco (2-1 as a betting entry with Cato Double).
Alden's Ambition gradually pulled away in the backstretch and led by seven lengths with five-eighths of a mile to go.
Approaching the half-mile pole, Duo Disco, ridden by Mario Pino, overtook Birthday Fling and was gaining fast on Alden's Ambition, reducing the lead to 1 1/2 lengths midway around the turn.
Alden's Ambition, who had the reputation of being a one-dimensional sprinter, had not run longer than six furlongs since March and there was speculation that she lacked stamina. Yesterday, she proved otherwise.
Duo Disco moved within a length of the leader on the outside of the final turn. But Alden's Ambition held off Duo Disco through the stretch on a splendid effort by Davidson, who whipped her twice en route to a half-length victory.
Cato Double rallied for third, a nose in front of Hatched (5-1). Favored Final Chapter (2-1) was sixth.
Alden's Ambition was clocked in 1:44 3/5 for her second straight stakes victory at Bowie. She won the Tosmah Handicap June 22.
