Woody Jacobs, Monday's medalist, sank a nine-foot putt for par on the first playoff hole to defeat Mark Ciocco of Latrobe, Pa., and advance to the round of 16 in the 16-17-year-old division yesterday at the 11th Bobby Bowers Memorial junior golf tournament at Springfield Golf and Country Club.

Jacobs, of Arlington, who plays out of Andrews Air Force Base golf course, faces Fred Widicus of Army Navy, who beat Mike Luckett of Bowie Country Club, 7 and 6. Widicus, winner of the Frank Emmet Schoolboy last month, defeated Scott Keller of Holly Hills Country Club, 4 and 3, earlier in the day.

Jacobs beat his clubmate, Shawn Martin, 3 and 1, in his first match.

In the girls division, Donna Martz of Broadway, Va., came from 5 down after 12 holes to defeat Beth Staples of Haymarket, Va., on the 19th hole. Martz, who won all of the last seven except No. 17, which she tied, won when she reached the playoff green in two and two-putted for par. Staples missed a bogey putt on the 18th to force the playoff.

Kirsten Stone of Bethlehem, Pa., the girls medalist, defeated Vickie Linkous of Roanoke, 2 and 1.

Pete Costolanski of McLean, who shot a qualifying round of 73 -- one off the medalist's pace -- birdied the 13th, 14th, 15th and 16th holes to beat Steve Serrao, 3 and 2.

Costolanski was 1 down at the turn but won the 10th and 12th with pars. He birdied the par-3 13th to win it. They halved the 14th and 15th, both par 5s. Costolanski ended the match on the par-4 16th when he used his pitching wedge from 130 yards out and left the ball five feet from the pin. He sank the putt for his fourth consecutive birdie.

In the boys 14-15 division, Charles Wentworth of Newport News defeated medalist Tom Iredell of Indian Spring, 2 and 1. Chris Green of Harrisonburg, the medalist in the boys 13-and-under, beat David Hiber of Congressional, 5 and 4.
