Lance Belen homered and scored both of Prince William's runs and Orlando Lind allowed only five base runners in seven innings as the Pirates defeated the Hagerstown Suns, 2-1, in a Carolina League game last night before 2,638 at Prince William County Stadium in Woodbridge.
Ben Morrow earned his eighth save since joining the team June 4 when he got the only batter he faced, Dana Smith, to pop out to first, ending the game.
The Suns threatened in the ninth when Jeff Doerr singled with two out and went to third on a single by Randy Riley and an error.
The victory was the Pirates' third on the home stand that began five games ago. Monday, the Pirates will again host the Suns, who plan to start Mike Flanagan, the Baltimore Orioles pitcher who is recovering from an Achilles' tendon injury.
Last night, with two out in the top of the eighth, the lights went out and play was delayed for 20 minutes. Last Wednesday when Prince William lost to Lynchburg, 1-0, the game was delayed for 1:44 when the lighting failed.
The Pirates went ahead, 1-0, in the second when Belen doubled and, two batters later, Steve Barnard lined a double to right.
First baseman Belen gave the Pirates a 2-0 advantage when he hit Rick Steirer's 2-2 pitch over the wall in right field to lead off the fourth.
