Cale Yarborough, given a big break near the end, pulled away on the next-to-last lap and won the Talladega 500 NASCAR Grand National stock car race by several feet.
It was Yarborough's first Talladega 500 victory although he had taken two Winston 500 races at the Alabama International Motor Speedway.
Yarborough's Ford was just ahead of Neil Bonnett's Chevrolet. Finishing behind Bonnett were Ron Bouchard, Bill Elliott and A.J. Foyt.
Elliott, the year's dominant driver and the fastest qualifier for this race, led most of the way until his Ford began sputtering while coming off pit row on the 167th of the 188 laps . . .
Emerson Fittipaldi, two-time Formula 1 world champion from Brazil, got a last-lap assist from Tom Sneva as he held off Al Unser to win a crash-filled Michigan 500, his first Indy-car victory. It was the slowest Indy-car race since 1955.
Unser was closing in on Fittipaldi with just eight laps remaining in the 250-lap event when Mario Andretti crashed hard in the fourth turn. Andretti was taken to a nearby hospital, where it was reported he had suffered a fractured right collarbone. He was then flown to Indianapolis, where he was admitted to Methodist Hospital. A spokesman at the hospital said Andretti was to undergo surgery last night or early this morning.
With one lap to go, Unser had one final shot but was slowed by Sneva, almost a lap behind the leaders. Unser crossed the finish line several car lengths behind Fittipaldi's Blue March racer, shaking his fist at Sneva, who wound up third and was roundly booed by the crowd after the race.
"I have to be honest. I have to give 6 percent of my prize money to Sneva," Fittipaldi joked. "Maybe I should give him 30 percent" . . .
Actor Paul Newman averaged 108.445 mph in driving a Bob Sharp Nissan 300ZX Turbo to his second GT1 victory in the Pocono Sports Car Grand Prix at Pocono International Raceway.
The two victories allowed Newman, who broke three speed records during the weekend, to move from 18th place to fourth in the Sports Car Club of America's northeastern division standings.
