Jim Neidlinger and Ben Morrow combined on a five-hitter to give the Prince William Pirates a 2-1 Carolina League victory over the Winston-Salem Spirits last night before 2,616 at Prince William County Stadium in Woodbridge.

In the completion of a game suspended last week, Prince William defeated Winston-Salem, 3-2, as Reggie Barringer's seventh-inning squeeze bunt scored Scott Knox with what proved to be the winning run.

In the regularly scheduled game, Reggie Hammonds led off the Prince William third by reaching base on Cruz's second of three errors. Neidlinger's sacrifice moved Hammonds to second and he advanced to third on a ground out, before scoring on a single up the middle by Jose Lind.

In the fourth, Lance Belen doubled to right-center with two outs and went to third on a single by Dimas Gutierrez. The Pirates took a 2-0 lead when losing pitcher Carl Hamilton (8-8) balked Belen home.

Damon Berryhill homered for the Spirits in the seventh to make it 2-1.

In the eighth, after Neidlinger (6-9) struck out Rick Hopkins for his ninth strikeout of the game, Winston-Salem loaded the bases with consecutive singles by Rich Amaral, Rick Rembielak and Dave Martinez. Morrow then came in to relieve Neidlinger and threw his first pitch in the dirt, past catcher Burke Goldthorn. The ball bounced off the backstop to Goldthorn, who turned and threw to Morrow to get Amaral at home.
