The Prince William Pirates sent 11 batters to the plate in the sixth inning and scored six runs in defeating the Salem Redbirds, 9-7, last night in a Carolina League game before 832 at Prince William County Stadium in Woodbridge.

The Pirates' Barry Bonds had three hits, including a triple, two RBI and two runs scored.

The Pirates got three runs in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead and went ahead, 9-3, in the sixth. Salem scored four runs in the eighth and loaded the bases in the ninth against Pirate reliever Rob Russell before Ben Morrow struck out pinch hitter Joe Morales to earn his 11th save of the season.

Consecutive singles by Bonds, Burk Goldthorn and Lance Belen, a run-scoring double by Dimas Gutierrez and a double-play groundout gave the Pirates their 3-1 lead.

In the sixth, Salem tied the score when Kirk Bates doubled home Al Farmer and then scored on Jamie Doughty's single down the right-field line.

In the bottom half of the inning, the Pirates went ahead for good. Gutierrez led off with a single and moved to third on Bobby Bonilla's hard-hit ball to second baseman Jerry Browne. Steve Barnard gave the Pirates the lead with a sacrifice fly, scoring Gutierrez.

The Pirates got their other five runs on three walks and three singles.

Kevin Gordon pitched seven innings and struck out eight to earn his ninth victory against six losses.
