Rookie Nelson Simmons had two RBI, including a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning, to back the no-hit relief pitching of Aurelio Lopez as Detroit won at home against Cleveland.
Kirk Gibson led off the eighth with a double, went to third on Lance Parrish's sacrifice bunt and scored the winning run on Simmons' fly ball to deep center off starter Neal Heaton (6-13).
Simmons has gone eight for 16 with eight RBI since being recalled Monday from the minors.
Lopez (3-7) replaced starter Juan Berenguer in the sixth inning and pitched 3 1/3 innings, striking out four and walking none.
The Indians had tied at 2 in the sixth off Berenguer. Chris Bando singled and went to second on a wild pitch. Mike Hargrove walked and Bando scored on Brett Butler's single. Julio Franco flied to right field, scoring scored Hargrove. Andre Thornton followed with a sharp single to right field, chasing Berenguer.
The Tigers scored twice in the first inning. Alan Trammell singled, went to second on Gibson's walk and scored on Parrish's single to center. Simmons blooped a single, bringing in Gibson.
Berenguer, making his first start since May 16, struck out eight. He was a late replacement for Randy O'Neal, who has the flu.
