Dallas Cowboys quarterback Danny White suffered cartilage separation of his left rib cage in the exhibition at San Diego Saturday night and is doubtful for the next preseason game, team officials said yesterday at the club's Thousand Oaks, Calif., training base.
White was injured in overtime on a sack by linebacker Linden King. White left the game two plays before Rafael Septien kicked a 48-yard field goal to beat the Chargers, 27-24.
King visited the Cowboys' locker room to apologize to White, saying he did not intend to injure him.
After returning to training camp with the team at about 12:30 a.m., White checked into Los Robles Hospital in Thousand Oaks, where he remained yesterday. Hospital X-rays did not show any fractures, Cowboys trainer Don Cochren reported.
Coach Tom Landry last week said White will start in the regular season opener against Washington Sept. 9.
* Dolphins: Defensive back Don McNeal, who has had numerous injuries in his career, incurred a sprained right knee in Saturday night's preseason game against the Buffalo Bills and will be out at least six weeks.
* Jets: New York lost more than a 24-20 exhibition decision to the Cincinnati Bengals Saturday night. Tackle Billy Shields (knee), receiver Bobby Humphrey (fractured wrist) and safety Darrol Ray (separated shoulder) are out for up to six weeks.
* Rams: Running back Eric Dickerson, who will open the fourth week of his holdout today, said in a phone interview from his home in Sealy, Tex., over the weekend: "I'll sit here the whole season. I will. I mean, I hope it doesn't come to that."
