With the help of a complete-game five-hitter from Jose Melendez, the Prince William Pirates ended an eight-game losing streak last night by defeating the Lynchburg Mets, 3-1, in a Carolina League game in Woodbridge.

Melendez struck out seven and walked one in improving his record to 3-2.

The Pirates also were helped by five Lynchburg errors. Prince William scored twice with one out in the second. Steve Barnard reached on a walk and scored when Scott Knox tripled to right-center field. Reggie Barringer walked and went to second when first baseman Will Caraballo dropped a pickoff throw from pitcher Kevin Brown (3-5).

Brian Jones singled up the middle to score Knox before Brown got out of the inning.

Melendez worked out of a jam in the fifth. Caraballo led off with a double, Steve Phillips walked and the two advanced on a double steal. But Melendez struck out Scott Thompson and Kevin Burrell and got Brown to fly to left.

Shawn Abner and Caraballo led off the seventh with singles, and Abner advanced to third on Phillips' fly to center. Thompson hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Abner, but Melendez ended the threat by forcing Burrell to fly out to left.

The Pirates added a run in the eighth off reliever Doug Barba. Barba walked Jose Lind to lead off and Lind stole second. He advanced to third when Burrell threw the ball into center field. Barba's wild pitch allowed Lind to score.
