St. Louis Cardinals -- Signed three-year starting T Luis Sharpe to a four-year contract. Sharpe, who made the Pro Bowl team last season, had signed with the Memphis Showboats this spring, but he used an escape clause in the USFL contract.

Charles T. (Turkey) Hughes -- The former Eastern Kentucky University athletic administrator, who helped form the Ohio Valley Conference in 1948 and was its first president, died after a long illness. He was 83.
