After six scoreless innings in Anaheim, Calif., Jamie Quirk's bloop single drove in one run for Kansas City and pinch hitter Jorge Orta doubled in another.

By winning their second in a row over California, the first-place Royals strengthened their West lead to 2 1/2 games over the Angels. It was the Royals' 10th victory in 11 games.

Danny Jackson (13-9) gave up six hits before coming out in the eighth. Dan Quisenberry got the final six outs for his league-leading 33rd save. Ron Romanick (13-8) was the loser.

Frank White opened the Kansas City seventh with a single and stole second. After Steve Balboni walked, the runners advanced on Darryl Motley's groundout. Quirk, who was in the minor leagues until Aug. 20, then scored White. Orta, batting for Onix Concepcion, drove the ball to the center field wall to bring home Balboni. Quirk was thrown out at the plate on a relay from center fielder Gary Pettis to cut short the rally.

The Angels scored in the bottom of the inning. Dick Schofield walked with one out and took second on Pettis' groundout. Bob Boone then lined an RBI single off second base.
