Marcus Anderson, Tulsa safety, was in stable condition after sustaining two broken neck vertebrae in the final minute of the Hurricane's 21-17 loss Saturday night to Texas Tech. Anderson, a senior from Topeka, Kan., probably will not play any more football, but should be released this week and possibly resume classwork next week, Tulsa Coach Don Morton said . . .

James Clark, a freshman defensive lineman at Oklahoma State, has been found dead in his room, hanged, apparently the Big Eight's second football suicide this season.

Officials in Stillwater said no evidence was found in the room to give reason for Clark, 18, to take his life. At 6 feet 3, 240 pounds out of Wilmer-Hutchins High School in Dallas, he chose Oklahoma State over Colorado, Texas Tech and Kansas State.

He had not played in Oklahoma State's first two games . . .

Dick Bestwick, Virginia's 1976-81 football coach and currently assistant athletic director at Missouri, has accepted the post of executive director of the Peach Bowl, Atlanta's annual postseason football game -- won last season by Virginia over Purdue . . .

Malcolm U. Pitt, who quarterbacked the 1916 University of Richmond football team and went on to coach the Spiders in basketball, baseball (37 years) and football, and serve 26 years as athletic director (until 1972), has died in a Richmond hospital. He was 89.
