A tired John McEnroe says he is thinking of laying off tennis for a while.
"I definitely need a rest," McEnroe said after being beaten Friday night by Johan Kriek, 7-6 (7-3), 3-6, 6-1, in the quarterfinals of the $267,000 Transamerica Open in San Francisco.
McEnroe lost to Ivan Lendl in the U.S. Open final. Then he was hit hard by a stomach virus. Thursday night, he just squeaked past John Lloyd, 6-1, 6-7, 7-6. He said a short break from the circuit would help him.
"I don't want to break my behind for that chance to be No. 1 if I won't be able to play for the next four or five years," McEnroe said.
Kriek dispensed with Bob Green last night in a 54-minute semifinal, 6-2, 6-1. Stefan Edberg won the other, 6-2, 6-3, 6-1, over Paul Annacone, who beat Edberg last week . . .
In Barcelona, No. 1 seed Mats Wilander fought off Martin Jaite, 7-5, 6-3, and Thierry Tulasne beat Henri Leconte, 6-3, 6-2, to reach the final of the $250,000 Godo Grand Prix tournament . . .
Chris Evert Lloyd swept Lisa Bonder, 6-3, 6-1, in a semifinal of the $150,000 Virginia Slims of New Orleans. In today's final, Evert meets Pam Shriver, who defeated Anne White, 6-3, 6-2.
