Severiano Ballesteros of Spain posted a record 6-and-5 victory over an ailing Bernhard Langer of West Germany yesterday in the final of the $240,000 World Match Play golf championship at Virginia Water, England.

It was Ballesteros' fourth triumph in 10 consecutive appearances in the tournament, just one short of South African Gary Player's record five titles.

Ballesteros' margin bettered the previous best winning score, Player's 6-and-4 success against Jack Nicklaus in 1966.

Ballesteros, 28, who beat Langer, 2 and 1, in last year's title match, admitted he played "as well as I needed to" against the West German this time. Langer, also 28, who had been suffering from a virus all week, conceded he had "played as badly as I have in a long time."

Ballesteros won $70,000; Langer collected $35,000.

In the playoff for third place, South African Denis Watson, 28, defeated Andy North, the U.S. Open champion, 3 and 2 . . .

Heavy rains postponed play at the $350,000 Texas Open in San Antonio, with the leaders still waiting to finish the third round, which was cut short by rain Saturday night. If the weather lets up, PGA officials said the 15 golfers still waiting to complete the third round would start at 8 a.m. today, and the final round would begin at 10 a.m. If fourth-round play cannot be scheduled, the sponsors have agreed to pay the entire purse and call it a three-round tournament.

Jodie Mudd, the leader after two rounds, waited in vain today to return to the 14th hole. Mudd, at 13 under par, has a five-stroke lead . . .

At Cape Elizabeth, Maine, Billy Casper won the Unionmutual Seniors Golf Classic by two shots over Orville Moody with a three-under-par 67.

Casper wound up at 10-under-par 200 for 54 holes and Moody, after setting a course record of 62 at the Purpoodock Club, finished at 202. Casper, 54, who stands sixth on the all-time list with 51 PGA victories, earned $35,000.

Prior to the final round, a permanent plaque was placed at the first tee in memory of Rod Funseth, the winner of this tournament last year who died earlier this month. Funseth's widow Sandi was at the ceremony.
