Carlos Reveiz kicked three field goals and Dale Jones made an important interception late in the game as 20th-ranked Tennessee edged No. 15 Alabama, 16-14, in a Southeastern Conference game yesterday in Birmingham.
It was Tennessee's fourth victory in a row over Alabama and made the Volunteers 3-1-1 overall and 2-1 in the SEC. Alabama is 4-2 and 2-1.
Reveiz's third field goal of the day, a 28-yarder, came with 13:44 left in the game and gave the Volunteers a 16-7 lead just two plays after Tennessee quarterback Tony Robinson left the field with an injured right knee after being tackled by several Alabama players.
The preliminary report was that Robinson would be sidelined indefinitely and that he would undergo extensive tests today and Monday.
Mike Shula then completed four passes for 57 yards in a 61-yard Crimson Tide drive that ended with Shula's 19-yard scoring pass to Bobby Humphrey with 11:26 to play.
Alabama got the ball back after a Tennessee punt and Shula quickly completed three passes for 38 yards. But Jones, on a blitz, picked off Shula's next pass just as he released it, giving the Volunteers the ball at their 47.
"I was able to get my hands up and tip it," Jones said. "When I caught it, I knew I had better hold on to it."
Alabama got its last chance in the final minute when Tennessee's Bob Garmon shanked a 12-yard punt out of bounds at the Alabama 33 with 24 seconds left. On second down, Shula completed a 23-yard pass to Al Bell to the Tennessee 44 and had two incompletions before Van Tiffin attempted a 61-yard field goal that fell short in the end zone.
Reveiz's other field goals went for 38 yards in the second quarter and 48 in the third.
