Tom McCarthy's first regular-season goal since Feb. 2 ended a 3-3 tie with 9:02 left in the second period and sparked Minnesota in Bloomington, Minn.

With Minnesota on a power play, Kent Nilsson stole the puck from St. Louis defenseman Ric Nattress. Nilsson, who had three assists, passed to Brian Bellows, whose shot from the left circle was stopped by goaltender Greg Millen.

McCarthy, who missed the final 24 games of 1984-85 after suffering a concussion Feb. 14, then tapped the rebound past an out-of-position Millen.

Brian Lawton scored the game-winner three minutes into the third period, overpowering Millen with a slap shot. Mark Hunter later scored for the Blues.

Minnesota scored 21 seconds into the game when Keith Acton skated past defenseman Rob Ramage and beat Millen.

The Blues took the lead, scoring twice in a 2:29 span against Rollie Melanson. After Rick Meagher's end-to-end rush produced a short-handed score, Bernie Federko scored a power-play goal on a give-and-go with Kevin Lavallee.

The Stars tied at 2 on a power-play goal by Scott Bjugstad with 2:09 left in the first period.

Lavallee and Minnesota's Craig Levie scored second-period goals before McCarthy's go-ahead score.
