Bill Elliott hel off Cale Yarborough to win the Atlanta Journal 500 Grand National and further tighten Elliott's late-season duel with Darrell Waltrip for stock car racing's Winston Cup.
The Dawsonville, Ga., driver picked up 15 points on Waltrip, who came in third at Atlanta International Raceway in Hampton, Ga. The two will go into the season finale Nov. 17 at Riverside, Calif., with Waltrip leading Elliott, 4,141-4,121.
Elliott, in a Ford Thunderbird, earned $57,650 for winning the Atlanta, his 11th victory of the season and all of them on superspeedways. That broke the single-season victory mark on tracks one mile or longer that Elliott had shared with David Pearson since Sept. 2 when he won the Southern 500.
Elliott, who averaged 140.597 mph, swapped the lead with Yarborough several times during the 328-lap race. At last, he slipped past Yarborough for keeps on lap 282 on the 1.522-mile oval and beat him by 4.28 seconds . . .
