Louis Lipps got the go-ahead touchdown on a 71-yard punt return and Gary Anderson kicked a team-record five field goals in five attempts today to lead the Pittsburgh Steelers to a 36-28 victory over the slumping Kansas City Chiefs.
Pittsburgh (5-5), which started the day tied with every other team in the AFC Central, now shares first place with Cincinnati after winning its first road game in five tries this season. The Chiefs (3-7) lost their sixth in a row, assuring them of missing the playoffs for the 14th straight year.
Anderson, who had been struggling, said his game-winning field goal last week against Cleveland boosted his confidence tremendously. "Let me give you an example of what confidence will do for you," he said. "That kick that won the game last week looked like it was 60 yards. The (fifth) one today when I lined up looked like it was 18 yards."
Todd Spencer and Bob Kohrs threw key blocks for Lipps, who outran punter Jim Arnold down the sideline to give the Steelers a 20-14 lead midway through the second period. Walter Abercrombie capped a seven-play, 79-yard drive with a two-yard run to give the Steelers a 27-14 halftime lead.
Lipps, the AFC's leading punt returner, returned six punts for 128 yards and caught three passes for 40 yards. Lipps has returned two punts for scores this season and has 10 touchdowns overall.
Pittsburgh's John Stallworth totaled 126 yards on seven receptions, including a remarkable 41-yard catch in the final minutes while falling to the ground to set up Anderson's fifth field goal, a 29-yarder.
Deron Cherry gave the Chiefs a 7-0 lead in the opening minutes when he intercepted David Woodley's pass and went 47 yards to score. Moments later, Woodley connected with Stallworth on a 13-yard touchdown catch.
Anderson kicked a 35-yard field goal in the first period and began the second quarter with a 31-yarder. First Period
