Winston Western 500 -- Terry Labonte broke the qualifying record at Riverside (Calif.) International Raceway, winning the pole by touring the 2.62-mile, nine-turn road course at an average of 116.938 mph. Darrell Waltrip had held the record of 116.782. Tim Richmond took the other front row starting position for Sunday's race with a fast lap of 116.463. Waltrip earned the third spot at 116.282.
