Freshman tailback Eric Metcalf, from Bishop O'Connell High School in Arlington, Va., ran 71 yards for a touchdown and Russell Hays recovered a teammate's fumble in the end zone to help win the SWC game in Austin, Tex.

Texas had defeated TCU 17 straight times, but the game still seemed in doubt until Metcalf circled left end for the touchdown. Two defenders missed tackles.

"We were probably looking ahead a little bit to whom we will play next week and all that," Coach Fred Akers of Texas said.

The Baylor-Texas game here, where Baylor has not won since 1951, could determine the SWC title and host spot in the Cotton Bowl on Jan. 1. Texas is 7-1 overall and 5-1 in the SWC. TCU is 0-7 in the SWC, 3-7 overall.

TCU Coach Jim Wacker said Texas deserved to win, but warned: "Two years from now when we come back here to Memorial Stadium, we're going to have a great football team. We're not doing to be dominated any more then."

Metcalf also returned a punt 20 yards to set up a field goal. He finished with 123 yards on 11 carries but left the game with a sprained ankle with 2:54 remaining.
