A punt catch muffed by the Bills' Donald Wilson led to a 22-yard field goal by Fuad Reveiz that helped the Miami Dolphins to a 23-14 victory over Buffalo in an NFL game today.
Miami (8-4) scored twice on touchdown passes by Dan Marino and got a fourth-quarter touchdown run by Tony Nathan.
The Bills (2-10) came back from a 14-0 deficit to tie it in the third quarter with two touchdown passes by Bruce Mathison before Wilson's drop of a punt and Joe Carter's recovery gave the Dolphins the ball at the Buffalo 11 and Reveiz ended the tie.
On the Dolphins' first possession, Marino completed his first five passes as Miami moved from its 41 to score when Marino hit rookie running back Ron Davenport with a seven-yard swing pass.
The Dolphins scored again in the second quarter when Marino culminated a 48-yard drive by throwing a 15-yard touchdown pass to reserve tight end Dan Johnson.
The Bills got the ball back with just under six minutes left in the second quarter. Two scrambles by Mathison, one for 12 yards and one for 17 yards on third down, were key plays in the drive, which ended when Andre Reed made a diving catch in the end zone of a 11-yard pass from Mathison with 55 seconds left in the half.
Buffalo came back to tie it in the third quarter after stopping a Miami drive on fourth and one at the Bills 26.
The tying touchdown came on another scramble by Mathison. After eluding several defenders, he lofted a pass to Jerry Butler, who outfought Don McNeal for the ball on the Miami 10 and scored. The 60-yard play was the longest completion of the season for Buffalo and Butler's first touchdown of the year.
