In New Rochelle, N.Y., Jeff Condill scored five of his team-high 21 points in overtime, including the ones that put Gonzaga ahead for good in the first round of the Iona tournament.
After regulation ended 51-51, Howard's Fred Hill made two foul shots to open overtime. Gonzaga took the lead for good, 59-58, on Condill's 10-foot jumper with 25 seconds left.
Hill missed a 10-footer, Gonzaga rebounded and, with 18 seconds left, Howard fouled Condill, who made two foul shots for a 61-58 lead. John Spencer scored off an offensive rebound with three seconds left to cut Gonzaga's lead to 61-60. The Bulldogs' John Hurt, who was fouled just before the buzzer, made one of two free throws to end the scoring.
Howard had tied the game at 51 on Hill's jumper with 1:11 left in regulation. After each team missed shots, the Bulldogs took possession with 19 seconds left and worked for the final shot. John Spencer fouled Gonzaga's Mike Champion with one second left, but Champion missed both foul shots.
For Gonzaga, Jim McPhee had 14 points and eight rebounds. Hill led the Bison with 17 points and William Stuart scored 13 points, 11 in the second half.
Howard (0-2) will play the loser of the Iona-Lafayette game Saturday at 6 p.m.
