Arkansas State botched two field goal tries in the last 26 seconds during a snowstorm in Reno yesterday and lost an NCAA Division I-AA quarterfinal to Nevada-Reno, 24-23.

With 26 seconds left, Frank Richards lined up to kick. The snap, from the 24, was so high that holder Butch Snider had to pass. With five seconds left, Richards lined up for a 35-yarder but the ball slipped through Snider's hands.

Reno (11-1) trailed at the half, 13-10. Reno will play Furman in a semifinal at Greenville, S.C., next Saturday.

*Furman 59, Rhode Island 15: Furman (9-3) got four touchdown passes from Bobby Lamb and took advantage of nine turnovers in a I-AA quarterfinal in Greenville, S.C.

Tom Ehrhardt of Rhode Island (10-4) and his replacements threw an NCAA-record 90 passes and completed 45 for 532 yards.

*Georgia Southern 28, Middle Tennessee 21: Gerald Harris' three touchdowns upset top-ranked Middle Tennessee (11-1) in Murfreesboro, Tenn. The winners (12-2) will play a Division I-AA semifinal against Northern Iowa (11-1) next Saturday night. Northern Iowa beat Eastern Washington, 17-14, at Cedar Falls, Iowa.

*North Alabama 34, Bloomsburg 0: North Alabama (12-1) totaled 431 yards in Florence, Ala., to advance to next Saturday's Palm Bowl in McAllen, Tex., the NCAA Division II title game. Bloomsburg finished 12-1.

North Alabama will play North Dakota State (10-2-1), which beat South Dakota, 16-7.

*Augustana 14, Central, Iowa 7: Tackle Jeff Widdop recovered a fumble in the end zone late in the first half to provide the winning margin in a Division III semifinal in Rock Island, Ill.

The Illinois school (12-0) has won 36 straight and will play Ithaca in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl next week in Phenix City, Ala. Ithaca (11-1) beat Gettysburg, 34-0.
