James Burkley scored 28 points, leading Delta State (8-1) over the University of the District of Columbia, 82-78, in the first round of the Florida Southern-Ledger Classic tonight. UDC (4-3) will play Saturday's consolation game at 6:30 p.m. against the Mount St. Mary's, which lost, 84-78, to Florida Southern.
Delta led, 44-37, at halftime, but UDC tied at 65-65 with 4:14 remaining. Delta State then took the lead for good on a jump shot by Carl Brown, who finished with 22 points.

In Chapel Hill, N.C., Ranzino Smith scored a career-high 15 points and sparked an 18-0 run midway through the first half for top-ranked North Carolina.
The Tar Heels (9-0) led, 12-11, with 12:53 left, but held Stanford without a field goal for 6 1/2 minutes as they opened a 30-11 lead. The Cardinals (5-2) shot 27.1 percent from the field and drew no closer than 12 points the rest of the way.

Mark Price had 19 points and Bruce Dalrymple 14 as the Georgia Tech backcourt led the seventh-ranked Yellow Jackets to a 83-58 victory over Texas A&M in Jacksonville. Jacksonville beat Southern Mississippi, 80-66, in the second game.
Price scored 15 in the first half and Craig Neal had 10 as the 6-1 Yellow Jackets took a 44-25 halftime lead. Don Marbury led Texas A&M (5-4) with 23 points, 18 in the second half. LSU Invitational:
Sophomore forward John Williams scored 28 points to lead ninth-ranked Louisiana State (10-0) to an 82-61 victory over Southeastern Louisiana in Baton Rouge, La.
Southern University beat Northeastern Louisiana, 78-70, for the other championship game berth.

Forward Kenny Walker scored 19 points, 16 in the first half, and guard James Blackmon had 18 as 13th-ranked Kentucky crushed East Carolina, 86-52, in the opening round in Lexington, Ky.
Kentucky (6-1) will meet Pepperdine (7-1), a 75-68 winner over Southern Methodist, for the championship. East Carolina (4-2) and Southern Methodist (6-1) will play in the consolation. UAB Classic:
In Birmingham, Jerome Mincy had 16 points and nine rebounds to lead No. 14 Alabama-Birmingham (10-1) to a 86-46 rout of Campbell (2-5). Alabama-Birmingham held the Fighting Camels to 15 percent shooting in the first half.
In the other game, Lance Fulse scored 23 points, leading Tennessee-Chattanooga (6-2) to a 89-78 victory over Mississippi.
